Cooperation with French Partners Continues to Expand
For many years, the Research and Production Center “Phytochemistry” has maintained close scientific cooperation with French universities and industrial companies.
The herbarium specimen of Artemisia glabella Kar. et Kir., collected in the Karkaraly Mountains in 1840 by the discoverers of this species, the Russian botanists G.S. Karelin and I.P. Kirilov, is preserved in the Central Herbarium Collection of France in Paris.
This endemic species of wormwood proved to be the only natural source of the original anticancer drug Arglabin.

In collaboration with Professor Alain Berthod (University of Lyon, France), chromatographic studies are being carried out on the sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Kazakhstani plants.
With the participation of the French company Kromaton (Annonay, France), fast centrifugal partition chromatography (FCPC-HPLC) has been introduced into the pilot pharmaceutical production facility of the Research and Production Center “Phytochemistry”. This advanced technology has replaced the labor-intensive and costly conventional column chromatography previously used for the separation and purification of plant extract constituents.

Joint research on steroid compounds isolated from endemic plants of Kazakhstan is being conducted in collaboration with Professor René Lafont (Sorbonne University, France).
On June 26, the laboratories and pilot pharmaceutical production facilities of the Research and Production Center “Phytochemistry” were visited by Mathieu Perrissot and Nathan Makoko, students from Évry Paris-Saclay University (Évry-Courcouronnes, France). The students showed particular interest in the Center’s research in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacogenetics, especially regarding the clinical application of original phytopharmaceutical products.
